Discovering our energy-being through intention, breath and movement

Upcoming Events & Classes

Tai Chi-Qigong for health is our primary focus. We provide detailed teaching geared towards each individual's needs. We build a health baseline first and then move towards fitness. Each class focuses on adding to your practice, so that each individual eventually creates their own healing, health and wellness practice.  Please note, classes are in-person and some are also via Zoom.

Join me in the gentle movements of Dao Yin and Qigong amidst the serene beauty of Woodlands Garden. These ancient practices are designed to reduce stress and connect with nature, offering a peaceful way to nurture both mind and body. This class is part of the Health and Wellness in Nature initiative at Woodland Gardens.

Over the course of 8 weeks, we will gather in the screened-in Pavilion at Woodlands Garden, where we’ll practice Qigong and Dao Yin. These practices emphasize intentional breathing, balance, and gentle movements—both standing and on the ground—to help cultivate flexibility and harmony. As foundational practices for Tai Chi, they offer an excellent introduction to this transformative discipline. Weather permitting, we’ll also enjoy walking the grounds using forest bathing techniques, guided by Neil's deep knowledge of trees.

The fee for the session is $30 for Coop members and Woodlands' Volunteers and Donors, otherwise a $60 donation from the curious public is requested.  Proceeds will be evenly donated to Woodlands Garden and the Tai Chi 4 LIFE Coop. Woodlands Garden is dedicated to preserving a woodland sanctuary that educates and inspires the community to connect with the natural world. The Tai Chi 4 LIFE Coop is a self-care cooperative that brings together teachers and students to offer practical methods for reducing stress through Tai Chi, Qigong, and other healing arts, enhancing overall health and well-being.

Neil, a skilled instructor in Tai Chi, Wild Goose Qigong, Tree Gong, Four Season Qigong, Five Element Medical Qigong, and Dao Yin, has taught Qigong at the Decatur Recreation Center and is a founding member of the Tai Chi 4 LIFE Coop. In addition to his teaching, Neil works as a consulting arborist, combining his love for nature with his expertise in mind-body wellness.

Class Description:  The CCC and Tai Chi 4 L.I.F.E. Cooperative provides an opportunity to learn the basics of Tai Chi (the Yang Style 24 Form) as well as “the mother of Tai Chi” called Qigong. Qigong is defined as "energy refinement over time," and practicing Qigong helps us develop our receptiveness to both the energy within and the energy that exists around us.  In class we will practice both Tai Chi and Qigong to strengthen our bodies' ability to open and let "chi" (universal energy) flow and clear the bodies' meridian channels.  L.I.F.E. stands for Longevity, Increased balance and strength, Flexibility and Energy.  Students report feeling much better at the end of class as compared to the start.  Join the class to learn these ancient cleansing and energy enhancing arts, as they help remove obstacles to help you retain and maintain better health.

Health benefits of Tai Chi/Qigong practice:  Many studies, past and present, continue to show the health benefits of an ongoing Tai Chi/Qigong practice.  Below are listed a few benefits:

    ·      Increased flexibility, muscle, tendon, ligament and joint strength

    ·      Improved posture, alignment and balance

    ·      Integration of body, mind and spirit; aiding concentration

    ·      Improved circulation, blood pressure, and heart rate

    ·      Reduced stress/tension by improving relaxation

    ·      Ease pain by increasing energy flow

Class format: 1) Gentle shaking to release tension; 2) Warm-up with the slow, spiraling movements of Qigong, along with deep breaths, to promote balance and alignment; 3) Practice of Tai Chi Yang-style 24 forms; 4) Cool down with self-massage techniques and enjoy renewed energy.

Equipment:  Loose clothing is encouraged, a t-shirt and baggy pants; along with flat shoes, low-wedge sneakers or rubber-soled shoes.
